I know you know.
Everybody surely remembers Willingham's End as a Man. Created quite a
scandal at the time though hard to see now why.
About life in a military school, made into a movie starring Ben Gazzara.
The phrase "end as a man" upon first being heard probably recalled
for many the title of another literary work about the
military life--Arms and the Man.
Somewhere in the book the superintendent of the military school (I
think it was) sez something like--if all you young fellas can stick
this out
then we will have succeeding in making you end as a man.
The three promising young authors were a much needed counterweight to
the very hetero reigning literary lion of the day, Norman Mailer.
Don't imagine Life noticed this latter point however.
