<< I've tried reading Kazuo a few times and never could. It all looked very
 teenagerish and superficial. >>

Well he's not, although the interview makes him sound like an idiot.

Remains of the Day is a very good novel of its type -- small specific. The
prose, sentence by sentence, is very good. His first two novels -- Artist of
the Floating World and Pale View of Hills -- are also very good; I like Artist
particularly.

The later novels -- although I haven't read the latest one -- flag.
