Steven,
I wasn't born until '72, and have spent very little enjoyable time on the west coast in general and in California in particular, but I loved Vineland ...
But, when it comes to understanding the subculture, I have to admit that recently re-reading V for the first time in 13 years (which I truly loved all those years ago) after spending 9 years in the Navy and often stationed in Norfolk, Va., , I appreciated the beginning of the book a lot more.

I find it hard to imagine any non-Californian understanding much of VLand. It's steeped in that peculiar 60s sub- culture.
Steve--I'm currently re-reading it and enjoying...just got to the first of his jokes on celebrity look-alikes -- Pat Sajak starring in the Frank Gorshin Story.
