I don't think contextual irony came into it..  have you heard his
pre-Blockheads group, Kilburn & the High Roads?  Music Hall was the
key description imo.  As for disco - some of the band came from the
funky end of pub-rock, and Chas Jankel made a couple of more or less
full on disco records later on
