Ok, I've had enough of this one over the past several
days....Credit this one to Edward Mendelson in his
introduction to his book, "Pynchon, A Collection of
Critical Essays", published 1978. He wrote in the
final line of the piece:
It is a challenge with special urgency, for it is
offered by a writer who--in the judgment of this
reader, and of many others--is the greatest living
writer in the English-speaking world.
Hope this clears up some of the conjecture of what
Bloom may or may not have said or written in this
context.
