<< I was talking to a book collector recently who
specializes in 20th century stuff, word is that
Melanie Jackson "recently" (in the past couple of
years, the story goes) contacted Viking to find out if
they still had the original GR manuscript, they did,
it's back in Pynchon's possession. >>
Very interesting. Always wondered where the original was. Imagine
getting a look at that! What form do you think it's in? A number of
great curled lengths of quadrille paper?
<<Generally, that's true in DeLillo's books but Libra is the least
"affected" in that sense. Oswald's depiction is quite human--he's
creepy, but I believe DeLillo is able to take a nobody, a cypher, and
project him onto the average American psyche, feelings of inadequacy,
persecution, rage, naivete, etc.
p.s. Libra also includes a truer portrait of Oswald's mother--a very
damaged soul but hard not to sympathize
Rich>>
Agreed. If you have the slightest interest in JFK/Oswald/assassination
etc., you *must* read Libra. Rightly said above, the book manages to
humanise Oswald. And if he's creepy, he has strong competition for
creepiest.
I liked White Noise, was underwhelmed by Mao II, then enjoyed the
bravura
Opening scene of Underworld but got bored immediately afterwards, when
(if I remember well) there was some kind of desert scene.
Apropos of not too terribly much, I'm currently enjoying Ralph Ellison's
'Invisible Man', and just received DFW's 'Infinite jest' in the post
this morning.
Cheers
