THanks for the tip on the JOnathan Cape. Just received one today, in
near-perfect condition (hats off to Skoob Russell Square down there in
darkest Suffolk). 1973 price? £1.95. 2006 price? £19, but no delivery fee.
WHat a beautiful edition. Thanks again.

A-and: 20 different GRs? Respect!

Regarding the original query about hardcover GRs for sale: They ARE hard to
come by. As a somewhat less expensive replacement for your battered
paperback, may I suggest the softbound edition Jonathan Cape put out
together with their hardcover in 1973? As opposed to the American softcover
(also simultaneous with the hardcover), the British softcover has a sewn
binding, which means it won't fall apart even after several readings. The
paper is also of a very good quality and hasn't yellowed a bit after 30+
years. Plus, if you're so inclined, you can get a bookbinder to bind it in a
sturdy cloth binding, and the book will last you for life. I have around 20
different copies of Gravity's Rainbow, right from the American hardcover
first edition, to the infamous Taiwanese piracy from 1974 and the Viking
hardcover reissue from 1991, but the copy I read each time is my Cape
softcover rebound in a more or less indestructible binding of library cloth
(it only cost me around $50 to have it rebound). After close to 10 readings
it still holds up admirably. With a bit of luck, you can find the Cape
softcover for around $50.
