The Ice Storm & GR & hardcore answers (& lateral thinking)

Wow!

First off, I (and others) had assumed that in Moody's statement, "I think
there are only two references to it in the entire novel", that the 'it' was Watergate, and the 'entire novel' meant GR. But reading back over it again, your interpretation could indeed be what he meant.

And very well spotted references to GR in Ice Storm. I enjoyed The Ice Storm, actually I read it in one day whilst laid up in bed with a cold and it really cheered me up. Then it was made into a really pretty good film, Kevin Kline and Sigourney Weaver particularly good in it, also Ricci and the other kids.

Cheers
JC

OK: I guess I'm more hardcore than Moody is, since I can spot more than two references. Here are a couple of hardcore answers:

The Ice Storm, p. 129: "they were all scattered like seeds, flying outward from the primal fist of Europe long ago" refers to GR, p. 170: "What if we're all Jews, you see? all scattered like seeds? still flying outward from the primal fist so long ago."

The Ice Storm, p. 192: The description of Fantastic Four #140 mentions "some extinct Negative Zone creatures, called Hereroes." This may in fact be part of FF #140 - I don't know - but there is surely an echo to GR's Zone-Hereros (see e.g. GR 315) as well.

The Ice Storm, p. 216: "So Benjamin Hood left the way he had come, trying to undo what faulty recollection he had of the evening's mindless pleasures" - surely a reference to the famous original title of GR (see also GR 270 & 681).

The Ice Storm (p. 217): Benjamin Hood drives home from the key party: "This drive home. Holy Center Approaching" - cf. Slothrop & Närrisch's rescue of Der Springer in Peenemünde: "Holy-Center-Approaching is soon to be the number one Zonal pastime" (GR, p. 508).
