And fortunately for Nixon's reelection prospects there was a five
month wait.
Let me emphasize an important point that may not be self evident. It
does explain why my time frame is so different from yours.
"Watergate" as the notable event everyone remembers was not
principally about the "third rate break in" that took place in 1972
and naturally received some coverage in the Press. Rather the real
"Watergate" was the damaging revelations about far more nasty goings
on in the White House, including the commission of about six kinds
of felony ranging from obstruction of justice to abuse of public
office. It was the revealing of these starting with McCord in March
"73 and hitting a high point with John Dean's confessions a few
months later that made the big story and drove Nixon back to San
Clemente and its red tile roofs. How could a simple burglary amount
to a row of beans alongside Dean's tale of Nixon's Enemies List
and the organization set up within IRS to harass members thereof.
including McGovern volunteers in the recent presidential election.
These would have been something for Pynchon to put in his book if
only he'd written it a year later.
Hope this is not boring everyone.
