1085 pages of fresh new Pynchon not enough for ya? Well, here's one more
page!

How about that Pynchon letter supporting McEwan eh?  Ian must be feeling
pretty chuffed. Must be like having some guy pick a fight with you in a
bar, and a dozen heavyweight boxers jump in to defend you.

Pynchon's shorter works (those 'shitty essays') and so on, are always
written in such a wonderful, elegant, gently humorous tone, and in a
sense represent another whole, to-date neglected, strand of his output.
Some day they'll be collected and published, a la 'Slow Learner'.

Who amongst us, whatever side of the pond we're on, didn't get a welcome
chuckle from that "impossible on this side of the ocean to appreciate in
any nuanced way'?

Now, what's the betting on whether this was just a case of Pynchon
feeling particularly moved to defend a fellow author on a matter that's
close to his own heart, or does it maybe herald the evolution of a new,
media-friendly Pynchon, available for interviews, public readings,
children's birthdays..... only joking!
