To discover in the course of research some engaging detail we know
can be put into a story where it will do some good can hardly be
classed as a felonious act -- it is simply what we do. The worst you
can call it is a form of primate behavior. Writers are naturally
drawn, chimpanzee-like, to the color and the music of this English
idiom we are blessed to have inherited. When given the choice we will
usually try to use the more vivid and tuneful among its words.

        --Thomas Pynchon

Case in point from the Proceedings of the Council of Maryland copied
and pasted into M&D:

"That Capt Shelby at Length Proceeded to the Marriage Ceremony, which
he performed by asking the young Man whether he would take that Woman
to his lawful Wedded Wife? and put the same question, mutatis
mutandis to the young Woman; after which he pronounced them to be
lawful Man & Wife, saying *Jump Dog, Leap Bitch, and I'll be damned
if all the Men on Earth can unmarry you*."
