The passage on page 78 you refer to might just as easily be seen as a spin 
on GR's theme of naming/the act of naming. Sure, the characters on page 78 
are reluctant to speak out loud, to name the Anti-Stone, but the words 
'ritual reluctance' are never actually deployed, are they? Merle's 
reluctance makes perfect sense in the alchemical context of this passage, 
and doesn't necessarily point to the ritual reluctance in Lot 49, which had 
other motives (a mortal fear of blackclad assassins, as opposed to a bit of 
alchemical superstition).
