>A word we all have to remember is "Also". [...] Much of AtD is about

Yes, you're absolutely right, and I look forward to subsequent readings of
the book. Just because I'm not to keen on a hunt for hidden centers doesn't
mean that I'm not keen on letting meanings spiral upwards into the aether
and patterns of meaning grow beyond the ability of a single mortal
individual to hold them all in his poor little head at once. In contrast
with many other authors, Pynchon's novel seem to increase rather than
decrease in complexity as you reread them, and that is one of the main
attractions for me. We'll never get to the end of AtD.
>There is more than one meaning to "central" in a book.
Right again. I've often found that the most "central" issues in Pynchon's
novels are the ones that are most dispersed throughout the text. A search
for central issues in AtD should take place in the margins.
>While the word

Yes, and someday someone may dig up a reference or two which will convince
me of Tristero's presence in the novel. Not so far, though ;-)

Sadly, I haven't read Proust, but it doesn't seem unlikely that AtD will
contain references to that huge set of novels.

Yeah, as long as we are not emulating the Fashoda crisis in V. - "toss[ing]
sparks in search of a fuse" - we should all be allright!
All best,
Tore
