I was in Korea, in the Army, 1n '73, the year Superfly
came out.  Many of Black soldiers in our unit, and
elsewhere in the 2d Infantry Division, responded
enthusiastically to the fashion innovations therein,
and, thanks to a local labor market that provided
hand-made shoes for $10 and 3-piece suits for the
same, the bars and muddy streets of the R&R camptowns
soon became the site of tricked-out pimp-style
stylin':

But, "Back to the World" was the Curtis Mayfield album
that we listened to the most that year, because that's
where we wanted to be.
