Tin House bows to Penguin to retitle book
Tuesday, December 12, 2006
Penguin Books has forced Portland publisher Tin House to change the name of
a 784-page art book based on Thomas Pynchon's novel "Gravity's Rainbow."
The book's title has been changed from "Gravity's Rainbow Illustrated" to
"Pictures Showing What Happened on Each Page of Thomas Pynchon's Novel
Gravity's Rainbow." The new title, which Tin House editorial director Lee
Montgomery called "wonderfully McSweeney's-esque," is what the piece of art
by Zak Smith was called when it was displayed at the Whitney Museum in 2004.
Stickers with the new title will be placed on copies of the book before they
are shipped from the warehouse. Montgomery said a few copies with the old
title might have been sold at a bookstore event in Los Angeles, but the book
hadn't gone on sale in stores or on the Tin House Web site when Penguin made
its request.
Penguin was concerned the title "Gravity's Rainbow Illustrated" implied an
endorsement by Pynchon, the notoriously reclusive writer whose new novel,
"Against the Day," has just been published.
"Who wants to take on Penguin? We don't," Montgomery said. "This was all
about paying homage to Pynchon and his wonderful work."
