Glad you liked it. Originally written in 1979, aimed at _New Scientist_ for
the 100th anniversary of JCM's death, but never published. I wanted to evoke
a sense of just how strange the field concept *was* when it was new... and
still is, though the edges are worn off with long use.

Everything in it, Iceland spar and all, long precedes ATD and the list
conversation. Coincidence, if you like.
