Baedekerland in AtD (spoilers?)

I would like to take issue with this accusation of Tom Leclair

"In V., Pynchon mocked "Baedekerland," but that's what he gives us now."

http://www.bookforum.com/leclair.html

Whereas in V. it was evident that Pynchon described European locales using
guidbooks or whatever, in AtD I feel that Pynchon visited many places
described in the novel. It is unlikely that he has been to the Inner Asia,
but judging by the way he describes, say, Venice, Vienna, Gottingen, and
some other European cities (plus that snippet of info about him visiting
Germany) this is anything but Baedekerland, this is land seen by the
penetrating eye of the writer. The Venice of AtD is very different from the
Florence of V. (I've been to both) He MUST have been there. I feel it.
