Picturing the Void

"When I heard that artist Zak Smith had decided to illustrate Gravity’s
Rainbow, page by page, images came into my head, my own imagined version,
but I was startled to find it somewhat murky. I saw a faceless Slothrop, the
protagonist-searcher, with a rocket inside him only visible in a certain
glare-light, moving through an industrialized cityscape lit with the oranges
and swirling whites depicted on the cover of my 1973 Viking edition. I saw a
mandala of unhinged images encircling an ill-defined character: uniformed
boys and their toys; benzene, radios, some sort of secret railroad of the
rocket; hippie-physicist-brain-wave kabbalah — but no face for Slothrop."
