There's no doubt that Pynchon must have been exposed to the Dead, and
through them Hunter's lyrics, but this song seems pretty obscure. I'm a
devout Deadhead (and a big fan of Hunter's lyrics) and I've never heard of
it. A little digging around on the GD Lyric and Song Finder shows that the
song was generally recorded and played using just the refrain and improvised
lyrics--cf:

Interesting none-the-less, not only for
A monument of marble raised
