Thanks for this insider info. The poor reviewers do indeed seem to've been
working under unreasonable constraints with AtD. Penguin Press and Pynchon
must certainly have known that the short deadlines would affect the quality
of the reviews, and I can't imagine that Pynchon is entirely happy with the
situation. Some may claim that "Rocketman is above all that shit", but
still: If I'd spent god knows how many years writing a novel like AtD, I
would certainly prefer it if the novel got a fair and well-considered
treatment by the reviewers, and I suspect that Pynchon is human enough to be
hurt - or at least annoyed - by the shallow and rushed thrashing he received
from many quarters.
