Rain Taxi Review

I found the Balkans sections especially rich - not so much in the
cities, but off-road. Having been in the general region earlier this
year might have helped me fill in the gaps without being aware of it,
but then again I had the same reaction to the Colorado stuff and I've
never been there. Less impressed by Venice. Different strokes, I guess.

Consider the settings:
is there anything in Colorado or Mexico described as richly as the
Balkans or New York City or Venice? >>

Agree, except about the Balkans - I didn't find those sections very rich
at all (though of course U reserve the right to adjust that opinion on
second reading), and I'll cast my vote that Pynchon definitely has not
been to Sarajevo. Speaking of which, perhaps Pynchon is the only author
for whom it doesn't seem odd to feature Franz Ferdinand as a character,
set a segment of the novel in the Balkans, including Sarajevo, yet not
feature the assassination.
