I just pickd up my copy on the way to work and have scanned through it,
though I haven't had a chance to read it properly. The extract on the
website doesn't reflect the tone (or content) of the review at all.
It is gernerally very positive, though tempered, and insightful. Most of
all it seems to be based on a careful and sympathetic reading of the
novel.
Here is what he has to say about other reviews:
"Critics can't bear this lack of story , and have been keen to see in
Against the Day a steep drop (once gifted writer finally loses his grip)
or a new adventure (arcane writer seeks a new, broader public), but
nothing of this kind is happenning. This amazing writer continues to be
amazing, and in much the same way as he always was.
Much of this book seems to me as compelling as anything Pynchon has
ever written: ambitious but low-key amiable in its anger"
After the first couple of reviews, and what seems like an untimely rush
to judgement, I have taken to avoiding them, but it seems like the book
might finally have gotten the review it deserves.
