Great just browsing through those section openers.

Probably means very little indeed, but I noticed (by my count) 23 of those 
either begin with, or contain, the phrase "one day". This does seem to fit 
with the 'and that was how Kit came to find himself shipping out fo..r' / 
'and who should they bump into but..' narrative structure of the book.
