I certainly hope you got a chance to read other books by Eco! "The
Island of the Day Before" is, imho (but I'm not alone), his
weakest. Foucault's Pendulum is his best followed by The Name of
the Rose, Baudolino, The Mysterious Flame of Queen Leona and
finally, TIotDB. I've also read some non-fiction and would
recommend How to Travel with a Salmon, Travels in Hyper-Reality
(especially if you have any connection to Southern California), Six
Walks in a Fictional Woods probably in reverse order but take your
pick. I'd stay away from the heavy duty history and semiotic texts
unless you really are into that sort of thing. I have "On
Literature" here in ye olde TBR piles but it seems to be comprised
of readings of specific books more than generalizations about
literature.
