I certainly hope you got a chance to read other books by Eco!   "The 
Island of the Day Before" is,  imho (but I'm not alone),  his 
weakest.   Foucault's Pendulum is his best followed by The Name of 
the Rose,  Baudolino,  The Mysterious Flame of Queen Leona and 
finally,  TIotDB.    I've also read some non-fiction and would 
recommend How to Travel with a Salmon,  Travels in Hyper-Reality 
(especially if you have any connection to Southern California),  Six 
Walks in a Fictional Woods probably in reverse order but take your 
pick.    I'd stay away from the heavy duty history and semiotic texts 
unless you really are into that sort of thing.  I have "On 
Literature" here in  ye  olde TBR piles  but it seems to be comprised 
of readings  of specific books more than generalizations about 
literature.
