I haven't read the scene you're talking about yet, but I know that
Pynchon sometimes makes his sexual relations more about power
relations than emotion, eros, love, etc. S&M plays big in his sexual
world, and submission is sometimes turned on its head, and sexual
martyrdom is an act of empowerment.
If the scene was "horrible and unappealing" it was most likely meant to be so.
