This is interesting too:

1974 [...] Viking President Tom Guinzberg arranges for comedian 
"Professor" Irwin Corey ("the World's Foremost Expert") to give 
Pynchon's acceptance speech at National Book Award ceremony, April 18.

Seems to imply that it wasn't Pynchon's idea after all.

But I suspect that Royster is mistaken on when Pynchon met FariƱa. From 
Pynchon's intro to _Been Down So Long ..._ it appears that it was 1957 
when they first met, not 1953.
