well, as a preacher, he must needs say that.  But coming from
Pynchon's selected narrator, it may be a meaningful highlight (like
the little patch of orange in a Picasso painting whose interpretation
figured mightily in a quite good short story that I can't remember
anything else about right now) that provides a context for the whole
tale
