Studies the use of history in _Ulysses_ and _Gravity's Rainbow_. 
Criticism linking the works of James Joyce and Thomas Pynchon;

"Although criticism linking the works of James Joyce and Thomas Pynchon 
abounds, much of it is superficial, comparing the writers only in  
terms of their innovation, their famed length and complexity, or their 
exclusive readership. However, Edward Mendelson, in 'Gravity's 
Encyclopedia', offers a much more substantial analysis of the 
similarities between _Ulysses_ and _GR_ by describing them as 
representatives of the encyclopedic narrative. By delineating the 
characteristics of the genre, Mendelson provides an insightful context 
for viewing these novels and offers a means of examining substantial 
thematic affinities often overlooked. [...]"
