Abstract: Explores the literary career of Pynchon through analysis of 
his novel _Vineland_, and speculates on his feelings about critical 
discourse about him. References to "death of the author"; readings 
center on the authority of maternity in the novel; the two reasons 
_Vineland_ seeks biological grounding; Pynchon's escape from the 
determinations of others in order to make the oppressive dilemmas of a 
literary career disappear.
