I think they sometimes play with that notion, too (isn't there a scene
where Dixon thinks Mason suggests "Dixon & Mason" but only jokingly,
to D's disappointment?)

Mason had the better connections, academic and political, while Dixon
had the mastery of manual arts.  So there's a "labor/management" or
Sancho/Don, byplay going on, isn't there?
