The Indians keep the shore in view and paddle northward to a
large river (the St Lawrence?). the unidentified settler woman has
been with them for weeks and has done everything she has been directed
to do.
They arrive in Quebec in the winter. She is delivered to a
Jesuit College in the dead of night. At dawn she is served porridge and
coffee that has been made from an automatic coffee maker set the night
before using a french timing device. She is taken to see a Jesuit named
Pere de la Tube. A spanish philosopher sits and observes. A Chinese man
enters the room, hands the priest a paper and leaves. The priest advises
her to keep her eyes lowered.
The method of Jesuit telegraphy is jokingly described.
