re Book Description

As the oft-repeated negative comments roll in on
schedule, unchanged since the last go-round, about
anything Pynchon has written since GR or except GR -
the other novels, stories, blurbs, essays, & etc. -
it might be fruitful to consider how useful it is to
use the same criteria to evaluate everything he writes
and publishes, disregarding the different purposes for
which they are written, the differing publishing
contexts, etc. We have heard over and over again here
for several years from 2 or 3 of the same people, the
essays and other stuff aren't as good as GR or some
other spectacular example of his prose at his finest,
and that just seems, to me at least, a pretty
brain-dead argument to pursue. Apples and oranges are
different, quelle surprise!

The Book Description has already served its purpose
well - the book appears to be rising in Amazon.com's
sales rankings as word-of-mouth buzz spreads, so from
that perspective, no matter who wrote it, the Book
Description might already be considered a success.
It's also sparked discussion among some Pynchon
readers, another good result, if you like that sort of
thing I suppose.

But go ahead, beat that dead horse if that's your
thing. I'm sure we're all interested to hear, again,
from the 3 people who don't like his essays, blurbs,
or short stories. Or, at least provide some examples
to support the argument, instead of just stringing
together and flinging a bunch of insults. It's easy
to affix a label, justifying the characterization is
more difficult, that's probably why all they offer is
the name-calling.
