The United Mineworkers had a number of skirmishes with mine owners in Colorado during the late 19th-early 20th century, but the most well-known is the Ludlow Massacre of 1914, during which the Rockefellers' paid goons set fire to the tent-city where striking miners and their families were camping. It will be intersting to see whether Pynchon includes this in his book.
