Connotations of Against the Day

Although I'm not a native speaker and do not feel the language the way most 
of you guys do, I do feel that the expression "against the day" may have 
several different connotations, and, maybe, some of them will have little to 
do with the antagonism of the primary meaning of 'against'. Could you please 
enlighten me in this respect?
