the Insect
Trust's most famous member was
writer/critic/ethnomusicologist Robert
Palmer,
Interesting footnote: In 1973, Palmer toured Morocco
with Ornette Coleman, after whom Pynchon modeled the
character McClintic Sphere. Coleman and Palmer did a
couple brief, astonishing recordings with the Master
Musicians of Jajouka (available on the CD version of
his album Dancing for Your Head.

The Master Musicians are a caste of musicians trained
since birth, and exempted from work (but nevertheless,
living, at least back in the early 90s, in grinding
poverty). They were a particular obsession for many
Western writers & musicians, including Byron Gysin,
William Burroughs, Brian Jones and Ornette. The best
recording of the Master Musicians happens to be called
"Apocalypse Across the Sky".
