Thanks for clearing up the authorship question.
What "cult-like" behavior do you think the p-list
exhibits?
I see a group of people who like Pynchon's works
discussing them, in extraordinary detail at times, and
occasionally two or more of them meet up in real life
and have a drink and chat. Some of us have purchased
copies of Pynchon's books, instead of relying on
library copies. A few of us make a living teaching,
reading, and writing Pynchon's works.
What's anything that happens in this forum got to do
with a cult? It's not as if the discussion is solely
devoted to Pynchon, either. Everybody here reads
books by a lot of other people, and to do and discuss
lots of things unrelated to Thomas Pynchon or his
books (I mean, look at you, Morris, you almost never
post anything about Thomas Pynchon in this forum,
despite the steady stream of verbiage in your posts).
No group suicides, so far at least. And if there's a
secret handshake, nobody's clued me in yet, so I guess
the blackball's in. Drat.
If you feel embarrassed, I'd say that's your problem,
not Pynchon-l's. If some journalist wants to equate a
group of Pynchon readers and maybe some fans with a
"cult", he's wrong and that's OK, too. I doubt that a
complaint from the p-list is going to change his mind.

It's still embarrassing because the author of the
article is specifically
pointing out the cult attitude of the online Pynchon
community, and
specifically points to the P-list.
Doug is not responsible for the headline. We'll leave
it to others to
decide if it is an accurate desciption of any of us on
the P-list.
