I think you're missing the larger "see the online mainc-fan reaction to a 
short-lived blurb about Pynchon's latest novel" tone of the article.  And 
you're right, it's not entirely innacurate.  In some specific cases it 
barely scratches the surface.

His use of the term "Master" was meant as a skewer.
