Agreed. I would be surprised if the publishing business today permitted (or
even encouraged) an author to have as much voice in the marketing of his/her
books as it did in the groovy early Seventies. If publishing in 1973 was
anything like the marketing of recorded music at the time (ex: Led Zeppelin
exercising enough clout over the record execs in 1971 to distribute their
fourth album without title, name of band, etc. on cover), I'd say there was
probably more tolerance for such artistic license at the time. No wonder
Pynchon considered little Porky Pig faces to indicate chapter divisions
(instead of those five tiny squares).
I suspect all this "cloak and dagger" activity is more the result of
Penguin, Amazon, and the left hand not knowing that the right is doing.
