So I say:

Cryptonomicon, to see how it's really done.

But seriously, the book that immediately comes to mind
is Big Trouble by J. Anthony Lukas.  Not that I've
read the whole thing (I'll try & get to it as soon as
I finish rereading GR, which may be sometime after ATD
comes out), but it has a very good chapter on Big Bill
Heywood & the Cripple Creek mining strike, which is a
safe bet to be the events in Colorado mentioned by the
blurb.  The book is a doorstop & mainly about the
assassination of former Idaho governor Frank
Lautenberg.  But based on the bits of it I've read,
it'd make a good Baedeker for early 20th-Century
America.
