Mr. Sammler's Planet is a wonderful book.  I'm not sayin that his late books 
are as good, necessarily as this, or as Herzog or Augie March or Humboldt's 
Gift.  But I think they're well worht reading and I don't find them examples of 
cranky conservatism.

I didn't read the interview you cited but I understand that Bellow, much as I 
love his writing, could by a very prickly and often unpleasant human being.
