NP & waaay off topic - China

[Dave Monroe]

A friend is leaving shortly for what he says may be up
to a two year stay.  Beijing, I believe, at least for
starters, ostensibly to work on his Mandarin.  Any
advice?  I'd've asked offlist, but (a) I know there
are others here who might answer knowledgeably as
well, and (b) well, hell, it IS the Pynchon List, so
...
