As much as I loathe unnecessary quotations, here's a necessary
context-setting one, with a comment to follow.

According to John Krafft, editor of Pynchon Notes, when one of
the NY
regulars from this list rang Melanie Jackson (Pynchon's wife
and agent)
to ask about this, she flatly denied that Pynchon had given the
interview. ...

The miserable so-and-so who posted that apparently to the
P-list and recently to Wikipedia should have the decency to
admit that whatever I told him (I use the pronoun advisedly),
which I don't believe is accurately represented above anyway, I
asked not to be quoted, since I knew and acknowledged that I
was too far-removed from the source to be considered
reliable--as any writer of a passable research paper should
know. And I did not want to be used as a pawn in a petty,
childish, spiteful squabble. shame on you.
