Leave me out of this

[Ghetta Life]

Not really giving a shit about the Playboy interview, but the subject of 
translating a Japanese novel into English has been something I've wondered 
about lately.  Last  week I finished Kobo Abe's _The Ark Sakura_ (an OK read 
with a very interesting ending), and I was struck by the strange feel of the 
dialogue between the characters.  Monologues sounded fine, but the dialogues 
all felt choppy.  I really had the image of the dialogue one hears (and 
sees) in a dubbed Japanese movie, short staccato back and forth exchanges 
were the rule, and I was wondering if it was all the author, or the nature 
of the Japanese language and/or culture...
