Leave me out of this

Kobo Abe is a fine writer, though I enjoy his plays
more than his novels (though Woman in the Dunes is
great!) In college I directed a version of "A Man Who
Turned Into A Stick", which is a strange tryptich of
plays about a man in a (or who is a) suitcase, a
boxing match, and, of course, a man who turns into a
stick.
Another good Japanese writer (other than Oe &
Murakami, who've already been mentioned) is Natsume
Soseki. A good place to start is his novel Botchan.
It's not avant garde or literary genius or whatever,
but it's a charming coming of age tale.
