Only sometimes.  He's recorded with his bands -- I think of him as having had 
two, with some holdover-- and his bands were great.

I know what you mean by quality control, but I don't know I'd call it that.  
He writes endless numbers of songs and records them, some way better than 
others.  His putting them on records has been, at least in part, a matter of 
satisfying record deals he wanted out of.  But yes, there's a lot of mediocrity, 
amidst a lot of really great stuff.
