Okay, the more judgmental rhetoric here ("rag,"
"idiot," "banalities," "braying," for that matter)
aside, this was by and large a fair assessment ...

... except that I don't buy that as at least Robt.'s
motivation.  One might speculate as to how the
argumenst would have proceeded had Robt. first gotten
wind of the statement, had it translated and posted it
himself, but ...

Again, I've no concern at the moment to prove/disprove
its authenticty, but I will point out again that,
while Melanie Jackson allegedly denied Pynchon's
involvement (just as Playboy Japan allegedly stood by
their attribution), I don't recall that we'd ever
heard about even a request for a retraction.  Not taht
we necessarily would have, or ever will, if one was
made and not respected/acquiesced to, but ...

At best, we have not even a she said/they said (along
with a he said/didn't say) situation, but a someone
said she said/someone said they said one, so ...

Well, it's apocrypha, and those concerned to
accredit/discredit it certainly have motivations to do
so well beyond "simply" establishing the truth. 
Personal, political, theoretical, even.  But right now
everything's still speculation, so I'd suggest that,
if anyone wants to go on about it, they do a little
homework and find something new, even if it's simply
that there is nothing new, to say about the matter.
