I enjoyed White Noise and Mao II. Mao II more than White Noise. I
can definitely understand where you're coming from.
Honestly, I'm about 250 pages into Underworld, maybe closer to 300,
and it's wearing on me. It's a quick read so I'll probably finish it.
Some of it I like, but a lot of it feels, I don't know, overwritten
sort of, and yet generally plain, if you get what I'm saying. Like a
more polished version of something you might find in a creative
writing class almost. I think a good way of saying it is, the way he
orders his words is plain, but the words he chooses to use can
sometimes be a bit, er, overdramatic maybe? I'm not going to cast my
final judgement til I'm finished though, but I remember trying to read
this book back around five years ago and got to about the point I'm at
and put it down. But back then I didn't really dig The Great Gatsby,
either, so I'm sort of giving stuff I tried and wasn't a fan of back
then another go.
Anyways, the fact that it has been a quick read so far, and the fact
that there are bits that I enjoy, is enough to keep me going.
I would definitely reccomend reading Mao II though. I am certainly
going to read his first, Americana, before the summer is out.
