my bad, it's not the Waste Land series (that'd be a novelization of TS Eliot - why not, it worked for Cats) 

It's the Dark Tower series, I think.  One of them is called The Waste Lands. And there are auctorial addresses to the reader at the end of several of the books.  There's also a Stephen King character or two or three who appear, one has a much bigger than cameo role.
He did get hit by a van, but the Stephen King character anyway claims to have more or less been slacking which that's why it took so long
