You might want to donate the freebies to the college library in case
they have unmet needs. Scientific books and journals are enormously
expensive compared to other types of stuff published. This is always
coming under criticism because much and probably most of he research
reported on is publicly funded. In the U.S. by the National Science
Foundation and the National Institutes of Health. Why should a
private company be allowed to profit so handsomely on the backs of
the taxpayer. But I'm being naive. Heck, this is America. The saving
grace of the arrangement is that scientific or other learned
societies sponsoring the journal usually has made a lucrative profit
sharing deal with the publisher, allowing support of the many useful
activities of said society. And I guess we don't want Bush and
company editing our brain flow.
