Ethical Diversions

I don't go looking for a fight, but I was nonetheless
fully expecting precisely what I got, (a) because of
the juxtposition of "Pynchon" and "Holocaust" in that
title, and (b) because I was posting it. Again,
recurring, but I shouldn't HAVE to expect it ...

But I start taking it personally when people start
slinging insults, however lame, at me. Ridiculous
objections like, I don't like the way that one snippet
is written, or, no one here could possibly afford that
book, or ...

Well, objections for the sake of objecting, which
makes one ask, what, or who, is the real target here
...

That one I got out of the local university library, by
the way, but, David, I probably make less than most
anyone here, and I manage to sustain not only a, uh,
"healthy" book habit, but also vinyl, films, booze ...

We SHOULD be able to discuss this stuff without being
insulting, condescending, dismissive, whatever, not in
the least because (s) it's the decent thing to do but
(b) no one here has any reason to feel superior to
anyone else, on any front. Nonetheless, some do, and
THAT'S when it starts to get personal ...
